Product Uses

We have broken down the main product uses to ten uses: birding, wildlife, landscape, sport, marine, aviation, theatre/concert, low light, general purpose and distance observation. There are also icons which indicate if a product is fully waterproof or has long eye relief. A hidden list of the text version of these icons is always provided for screen readers.

We have described what to look for in a binocular for each product use.

Suitable for birding Suitable for birding
Binoculars for birding need to have small magnification, a large field of view, a large front lens and good colour balance. The small magnification and large field of view means that it is easier to find the subject and then follow it as it moves around. The large front lens and good colour balance provides bright and accurate image allowing for easy identification of the subject. Select this link to view binoculars most suitable for birding.

A waterproof binocular with very low magnification and a large front lens is most suitable for marine use. The very low magnification provides a stable image while the boat moves underfoot. The waterproofing allows the binoculars to be fully immersed in water without being damaged. Select this link to view binoculars most suitable for marine use

The small size means that the binoculars are discrete while the low magnification will allow all of the stage to be seen and will provide for the best light transmission possible in a small pair of binoculars. A very high magnification, a large front lens and high quality optics suit distance observation the best. The high magnification and high quality optics allows the subject to be seen in great detail while the large front lens will make the image bright. Waterproof model Waterproof model
A good pair of waterproof binoculars will also be 'nitrogen charged'. This means that all of the air inside the binocular has been replaced by nitrogen. It stops the binoculars fogging when subject to changes of temperature. As there is no air inside the binocular, there is no water vapour to condense on the lenses and prisms inside. Long eye relief model Long eye relief model
Some binoculars are designed with 'long eye relief'; this is especially for people who want to wear spectacles and use binoculars at the same time. Normal binoculars are designed to focus the image on the lens of the eye. Binoculars with long eye relief focus the image around 15mm (half an inch) in front of the eye. This does not stop them working for people who do not wear spectacles, but it means that the image is focused onto the lens of the spectacles. It then leaves the spectacles to fine tune the focus for the eye. Select this link to view binoculars most suitable for use while wearing glasses
